What is Weekly Religious Education?
A program wherein the public schools with the parents' written permission,
release for a specified time boys and girls in the 4th and 5th grades of Frederick county
Schools to go to off-campus facilities for religious instruction. We study the Bible and the life of Christ.
Our off-campus facility is a renovated school bus, which takes the student off school grounds to a near-by parking space, to teach Bible and prayer.
Why WRE?
To provide the elementary children what the public schools cannot provide, that is
spiritual guidance which is necessary for the development of the whole child.
Is it Legal?
The principles of released time Weekday Religious Education were set forth by the U. S.
Supreme Court in the Zorah decision in 1952. the decision provides the continuing
legal guidelines under which WRE is conducted. the program is under the supervision
of the Virginia Weekday Religious Education Association.
How is the program financed?
NO PUBLIC FUNDS ARE USED. Currently twenty local councils are supported by donations
from churches, civic organizations and interested individuals.
Together they are providing instruction for more than 11,000 students in Virginia.
the Virginia Weekday Religious Education Association provides a state coordinator for the program and supplies
secretarial assistance for the coordinator.
What is taught?
The Bible is our primary text. The curriculum is interdenominational and
non-evangelistic and has been approved by the Virginia Weekday Religious Education Association and denominational leaders across the state.
